Fall 2009 Call for Grant Applications :
What would you do with $1000?
September 22, 2009
This fall, the Brockville and Area Community Foundation will be giving a number of small grants of $1000 each to local charities to help with their most urgent needs.
We know that you know what is most crucially needed for your organization, and we invite you to present your case to us, and if approved, we will grant your organization $1000 towards that initiative.
Please read carefully the following details about this fall’s grant program.
Who can apply?
You must be a registered Canadian charity operating in the City of Brockville or the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville. If you are not a charity, you may be sponsored by a charitable organization, but there are strict criteria that define that relationship. The Foundation cannot make grants to non-registered organizations. Contact the Foundation office if you need more clarification.
What will be funded?
Almost anything could be funded, provided you are able to make a successful case. Funds could be used for operating costs, a special project, or even for capital costs. The Foundation will be able to make about 12 grants of $1000 each this fall. Only one proposal per organization will be accepted.
What criteria will be used to evaluate the proposal?
The funded initiative must in some way enhance, or be in addition to, the work that you do. The Foundation will not fund budget deficits, for example, and it will not make a contribution that is only one very small part of an initiative (such as a major capital building campaign). The grant is intended to be used for something that is meaningful for your organization, something that helps finish this statement: “If we only had $1000 we could…”
As part of making your case, we will ask you to explain how our funds will in turn benefit the organization in terms of building capacity or enhancing efficiency. The ultimate mission of the Foundation is to strengthen and enhance the quality of life in the community, so we will be looking for this linkage.
Some examples could include (but are most definitely not limited to):
| Proposed Initiative |
Benefit to the Organization |
| Hiring someone to undertake a major re-organization of your client files and database |
Improves delivery of services to your clients and makes your operations more efficient as a result |
| Purchase of digital imaging software and hardware |
Ability to generate high quality materials in-house, reducing printing costs |
| Assisting in the costs associated with re-locating to a new office/ facility |
Moving to new facility will improve operations or service |
| Increasing staff time by one day a week over a couple of months to catch up on a backlog of work or to add more open hours |
To get caught up, or serve more clients at a particularly busy time of the year |
Why is the Foundation offering this type of program?
The Foundation has limited resources to grant this fall, and we recognize that charities themselves best know what their most urgent needs are. We are cognizant of the heavy workloads of most charitable staff, and are simplifying the application process given the limited funding we can offer.
What is the deadline?
Proposals must be submitted, by email only, no later than Friday, October 9, 2009, at 12:00 Noon. We will not be responsible for proposals that we do not receive due to reasons beyond our control. Upon receipt of your proposal, we will review it quickly and send an email to the address provided to confirm that we successfully received your proposal.
When will the grants be awarded?
We anticipate that the grants will be announced and the funds will be awarded no later than Friday, October 23, 2009. Grant recipients will be asked to attend a more formal grant celebration at a later date.
